To investigate the best weeding methods and equipments in eucalyptus plantations an experiment was established at Karabucak-Tarsus (in the East Mediterannean region) in 1969 with 6 replication-complete block design. Gobl disc and disc plough were used in one and two times, cross weeding disc plough was used in cross weeding with 1.5-2 months intervals.

For the time being, two main Eucalyptus seedling production techniques are applied in Turkey. These are : Direct seedling in to the containers and transplanting of the small seedlings in to the containers. This investigation was carried out to find out that, which production techniques is suitable for the out planting with minimum loss. According to the result; seeds must be shown between 7-17 of June in the seedbed then transplanted in to the containers. Under this conditions seedlings will have 4-5 mm diameter in one growing season and will be suitable for out planting with high rate of survival.

The experiment was established at Karabucak-Tarsus in 1976 with 6 replication-complete block design. Treatments 3 and 6 years weeding, Gobl disc and Gobl disc-Disc plough combination, 2 times and 4 times weedin a year. Gobl disc and disc plough combination, 4 times a year and 3 years weeding showed the best result according to observations done in 9 years.

Populus euphratica Oliv. is distributed beetween Dicle river in the east and Bozyazý river in the west from sea level up to 1300m in Turkey, mean temprature various from 13.70 –19.60 C.The highest temperature recorded is 46.20 C,the lowest temperature recorded is –25.10  C.Soil conditions are light and medium light texture, salinity %1.2,lime content % 67.7.

Experiment was established in 1969 with 4 replication complete block design at Karabucak-Tarsus. Different ground clearing methods were applied. The trees in the plots where disc plough was used showed the best growth.

Climatological differences and distribution of natural vegetation cover on selected sample plots were observed and some climatological stations were set up. The eastern part of Kocaeli Peninsula were divided into parts by humid forests in the north and dry forests in the south of drainage divide.

This experiment was established in the Kerpe plantation area on Kocaeli peninsula to find out the methods and the equipment which ensure the best effects on the physical conditions of the soil and the survival and early growth of the seedlings. Randomized split-plot in 4 blocks experiment design was used in this experiment. This research was followed for four years and this period was too short to see the statistical significance of the treatments and the methods used. But we had some sound clues and observations about the results of field experiment and the soil analysis which we can use them to decide the best treatment. The result obtained from our research have the similar aspects with the results of other research which were done by different research works. The effective deep soil preparation without turnover the soils and the topsoil preparation to obtain fine soil before planting is a suitable method for plantation. This soil preparation operation can be done with Komatsu rippers in strips (T1 treatment) or it can be done in complete area (T4 treatment). In addition to this the survival of planted seedlings can be increased with using the discharrow (T4 and T3 treatments) in first years. NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer application in the planting month is effective on heigh increment in first two years. So the duration of biological freedom seedlings are decreased and seedlings are conditioned.


28) INVESTIGATONS ON THE USE OF ONE AND TWO YEARS OLD ROOTLESS SAPLINGS OF POPULUS EURAMERICANA "I-214" AND POPULUS NIGRA "56/52" CLONES IN PLANTATIONS ON SUITABLE SITES

The experiment was set up in Ankara, Osmaniye, Izmir and Izmit with randomised block, 4 replications and 8 treatments. According to results the height growth and diameter increments have not been significantly different between 1 and 2 years old first class saplings and rootless saplings planted in normal planting pits and 2 years old of first class rootless saplings planted in auger pits on suitable sites one year old first class hybrid poplar saplings can be used under similar conditions in optimum sites while black poplars cannot be used.

An experiment was established in Hendek nursery in 1977 to investigate the nursery techniques of Abies bornmulleriana mattf. Which is one the most important forest trees in Turkey with randomised, split plot experimental design. Pot plants followed by transplanted seedlings showed the best growth and survival rate.


30) INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF LAND PREPARATION METHODS OF P. PINASTER, PLANTED IN MAQUIS SITES

This experiment was designed to investigate the new establishment techniques in maquis sites. There are two main objectives of this experiment : The experiment was established in Narli demonstration area which is 500 m high from the sea level and on the south east slope. Statistical design is a complete block design comprising five main treatment plots in each four blocks. Each main treatment plot was split into two subplots for the random allocation of weeding treatments. At the and of 7 th year, the results: During the 7 years diameter and height were measured and all measurements were analysed by using analysis of variance. The analysis showed that the best results were obtained in the treatments of double tine and disc (DT/D), single tine and disc,disc. In split plots weeding showed the best results. Briefly : In the areas similar to Gemlik plantations, ST/D and weeding give the best results on the P.pinaster's growth in diameter and height.
